Bell Ringers are needed in Union Springs!

Every year at Christmas time you see them at the fronts of businesses ringing the bells. This tradition started in 1900 when a teenage volunteer, Amelia Kunkel,  in New York City was fed up with the many bankers on Wall Street who walked by and ignored her. She decided she would buy a small bell from Woolworth’s department store for ten cents and the rest is history. Her thoughtfulness is what started the red kettle program and it has been going strong ever since.

Paving Project underway in District 2

The Bullock County Commission has secured a grant for  $400,000  from ADECA Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to pave roads in the Ponderosa Community and other nearby areas. The Ponderosa is set to undergo a transformative makeover, smoother roads and enhanced connectivity are on the horizon, thanks to our collective dedication.

Family Dollar / Dollar Tree now open

The new Family Dollar Dollar Tree store is now open to the public. The store celebrated their grand opening on December 2, 2023.  The new store is located at 110 Baskin Street across from Ryan’s Fish and Wings. The store hours are Sunday through Saturday 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. This new store will make a great addition to the ever growing Union Springs.

Chilly’s ICE Cool Band Entertains at Turkey Day Parade 2023

On Thanksgiving Day, Chilly’s ICE Cool Band started their day at five in the morning with the crisp cool air on their faces as they prepared to start their long day to perform in the 99th Turkey Day Classic Parade in downtown Montgomery. The parade took the band down Bainbridge Street to Dexter Avenue, over to Lee Street, down Adams Avenue, up Hilliard Street, and they ended the parade on Monroe Street in front of our State’s Capital Building. The weather conditions were chilly but the band did an excellent job entertaining everyone who attended the parade.

City of Union Springs Mourns the loss of a Councilman and friend

The City of Union Springs Mayor Roderick Clark & City Council members Louis Murry, Belinda Thorpe, Eugene Faulk, and LaTesha Howard mourn the loss of Councilman Rev. Louis E. Pugh. Councilman Pugh transitioned on November 20, 2023. He touched many lives during his lifetime. Rev. Pugh served as the Associate Pastor of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He also worked at the Bullock County Courthouse as Senior Security. Councilman Pugh will be sincerely missed by all the city and county officials and employees.

Braswell succeeding at Troy University

On November 13, 2023 Virginia Jane Braswell was elected President of the Delta Delta Chapter of Kappa Delta Sorority at Troy University. Previously she served as the Chapter’s Vice President and  Director of Administration. Virginia will begin her senior year spring semester in the Sorrell College of Business, working towards her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Risk Management and Insurance. She’s the daughter of Bradley and Liz Braswell and the granddaughter of Jane Braswell and the late John Braswell.
