Chilly’s ICE Cool Band Leads New Year’s Day Parade

Sunday, December 23, 2023(123123),  I was making sure that the bus was in working order. It started up immediately, but by the time I made it to the back, it had shut off. The Lord told me to call Nelson Mason to check it out, but it’s New Year’s Eve, I called and he came, it started but he wouldn’t take any pay. Amen. All’s well for Monday’s parade.

Why do southerners eat Black Eyed Peas on New Year’s Day?

The story of the southern tradition of eating black-eyed peas as the first meal on New Year's Day is generally believed to date back to the winter of 1864 - 1865.

When Union General William T. Sherman led his invading troops on their destructive march through Georgia, the fields of black-eyed peas were largely left untouched because they were deemed fit only for animals.

The Union foragers took everything, plundered the land, and left what they could not take, burning or in shambles.

Santa visited The Josephine after the Christmas Parade

Following the 2nd Annual Chilly’s Christmas Lights Parade that was held last Thursday evening, Santa met with the children of Bullock County at the Josephine Coffee/Cafe Art Center in downtown Union Springs, Alabama. Children and adults of all ages enjoyed taking pictures with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their elf. Hot chocolate and candy canes were complimentary of the Chamber of Commerce and First Baptist Church Women on Mission. Children lined up to tell Santa their Christmas wishes.

One-Love Annual Turkey Giveaway proved successful again

“Love is what love does,” is the best quote for this special organization. This is the fourth year that Reverend Michael and his wife Thawaina King, along with One-Love Ministries through Great Hope United in Christ Church, has had a Turkey Giveaway.

Reverend King’s dream was to bring everyone together in unity no matter what walks of life they come from. He wants to give back to the community and feels the best way is to help feed them.

The Bullock County Sheriff’s Department held a Holiday-themed Appreciation Program for the Deputies of Bullock County and the Deputies who work at the jail, on Friday, December 22, 2023 at 1 p.m. in the basement of the Bullock County Courthouse.

Dog-dumping becoming a growing problem in Alabama, rescue group says

After a puppy was hit by a car and dumped in Bullock County, a local rescue is stepping in to help.

Jennifer Gallagher, who runs Chick N Pups Canine Crusade, said her group and the area humane society rescued the dog, 4-month-old Krypto.

She said the dog had two broken legs and was later dumped near County Road 31, south of Union Springs.
