Bullock County’s 2024 Distinguished Young Woman Fredricka Douglas is pictured with Bullock County’s Committee Chair Midge Putnam. Douglas is in Montgomery this week preparing for the Alabama’s Distinguished Young Woman Program. The Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama program is January 19-20 at Frazer Church. Tickets for the Friday night preliminary, Saturday afternoon preliminary, and Saturday night finals programs are available for purchase at the door. The Chunnenuggee Garden Club met on January 11, 2024 to begin the new year. Sharon Capps hosted this year’s meeting at the “Paulk House” on County Rd. 22, which is used by Bonnie Plants. Sharon introduced two employees of Bonnie Plants to present a program on the procedure in planting and growing the potted ten plants on display. Club members were given potted plants to conclude the program.
Bullock County Humane Society pups get a lift from pilots at Franklin Field on Sunday, January 14, 2024. They will meet a flight in Enterprise, AL where other puppies will also meet and load onto another plane and head to warm, South Florida. “Thank you Save A Life Rescue, Stevie Willams, and Pilots and Pups Orlando,” stated BCHS Chair person Ginny Allen. Pups, Stacey and Worth were found by hunters at their deer camp and they cared for them over four days during the holidays. They then brought the pups to the shelter as soon as they had open kennels.

The Bullock County Historical Society (BCHS) met Sunday, January 14, at the Presbyterian Church. Dean Spratlan, BCHS President after handling the business of the Society which included reports on the Pauly Jail and Log Cabin, introduced the Speaker Harold Benton. Spratlan stated, “I first met Harold when he was in the National Guard in Bullock County, later he worked at the A&P Grocery then for the next thirty plus years had Harold’s Florist Shop.”

An update was released on Friday, January 5, 2024 stating that the third victim of Wesley T. McKinnon has succumbed to her injuries. Regina Rutledge, 64 of Langdale, AL., was the driver of the 2005 Nissan Altima that was hit head on by the alleged stolen 2018 Kia Forte, driven by 20 year-old Wesley T. McKinnon, of Union Springs, in Valley, AL. This accident also claimed the lives of Rutledge’s 98 year old father, her passenger, Aron C. Haynes, of Valley, AL., and McKinnon’s passenger, 18-year-old Cadence Brown, of Valley, AL.

The Bullock County Art Guild (BCAG) held the first meeting of 2024 on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the Josephine Coffee/Cafe Art Center in downtown Union Springs, AL.
The art guild is entering 2024 with new board members: Phillip Duvic, President; Linda Reynolds, Vice President; Mary Chapman, Treasurer; and Kimberly Hoffman Davis, Secretary.

The Hornets had probably the busiest weekend this season. Bullock County had two back-to-back rivalry games (Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee and Barbour County) on the first weekend of 2024. On Friday January 5, 2023 Bullock County welcomed the Golden Eagles of Booker T. Washington for the “Battle of HWY 29” on the court. BTW defeated B.C. 56-42 as the final score. Anthony Simpson finished with 14 points and Trevonne Palmer contributed with 12 points.
