State lawmakers pass new congressional map without adding a second majority-Black district

Alabama lawmakers worked last week on drawing a new map that defines its congressional districts. State lawmakers were sent scrambling after a federal court order mandated that the state legislators redraw its congressional districts so that minorities have a chance to elect the representation of their choice in at least two Alabama districts. The federal court ruling was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

BCER/SPA attended the Alabama Education Retirees Association (AERA) Annual Meeting and luncheon

Members of the Bullock County Education Retirees (BCER) and Support Personnel Association (SPA), were in attendance at the Alabama Education Retirees Association (AERA) Annual Meeting held May 2, 2023.  The meeting was held at the Montgomery Renaissance Hotel and Spa  at the Convention Center with over 450 people in attendance. Representing  Bullock County were: President James H. Cooks, Secretary Oris B. Jackson, Delegates  Burnice P. Lowe and Curley P. Hall.

Bullock County Humane Society Pet of the Week

This sweetie pie is Jacob! He is just one of the several kittens we have that will  be available soon at the Bullock County Humane Society. Jacob has begun his kitten vaccinations and has gotten his rabies vaccine, but he is still a little early to have been neutered. Jacob will be fully vaccinated and neutered come early fall, but with a face like his and personality to match, he won't be available long. Don’t forget it's Christmas in July at the Bullock County Humane Society!

Bullock County residents share concerns about litter and trash

Bullock County residents have concerns regarding litter and trash that can be found on public streets and in residential areas throughout the county. This comes as residents have made other complaints related to the county’s garbage pickup services recently.

The Herald spoke with a number of residents who share concerns that littering has become a major problem plaguing Bullock County.

Residents want answers after garbage pickup delays become a nuisance

Residents of Bullock County have expressed frustration with what numerous citizens have described as repeated delays in the pickup of garbage in portions of the county.

Reports have come in from residents in the Fitzpatrick Community that lengthy and repeated delays in the pickup of their garbage have become a public nuisance.

Road work is underway in portions of Bullock County

Bullock County residents have already seen road and bridge crews working on resurfacing roads in portions of the county., and following the July 11 vote of the Bullock County Commission, additional roads are slated to be repaved.

The Road and Bridge department is currently working on completing multiple projects across the county. The resurfacing and striping of County Road 15, Fitzpatrick Road, and portions of County Road 7 are ongoing projects the crews are working to complete.
