ASU’s Golden Anniversary Class of 1973 reunites to celebrate 50th anniversary, donates $253,000 to ASU Foundation

The Golden Class of Alabama State University (ASU) recently held a three-day celebration of the 50th anniversary of their graduation from the historic university. Members of the Class of 1973 reunited and held a gala, brunch, and dinner as part of their reunion celebrations. The group also participated in the Friday, May 5 spring commencement ceremony for the graduating class of 2023.

Now Hiring - Happy Mother’s Day

I speak in prisons often. Someone asked me how I speak to prisoners when I don’t have anything in common with the prisoners. I told them every prisoner had a mother, and so did I. This common ground unites us all. When I talk to prisoners, I mention my mom and theirs.

When I talk to high school students, I empathize with them and tell them I know their mom gets on their nerves. I  inform them that they get on their mom's nerves too. It's mutual. When I talk to students, I mention my mom and theirs.

Ladies of Jonesboro take walking tour of Union Springs

Wednesday, May 19, eight ladies from the First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro, Georgia arrived in Union Springs as the guest of Kathrine Adams Woods to attend the Red Door Theatre production of Maytag Virgin.

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I believe we all have dealt with mental illness in one way or another. Mental illness is defined as health conditions involving changes in emotion, thinking, or behavior (or a combination of these).

Last May, I published a book titled David's Depression. In this work of realistic fiction, I dealt with the stereotypes or myths surrounding mental health.

Community Leaders commemorate National Child Abuse Prevention Month

The Bullock County Department of Human Resources hosted a gathering of community partners on April 27 to commemorate National Child Abuse Prevention Month, observed each year in April.

The annual event underscores the importance of community members and organizations working together to keep children safe.

WIC income guidelines increase

Alabama’s income guidelines for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (better known as WIC) have increased and additional people may qualify.  If you are a woman who is pregnant, has had a baby within the past six months, or are currently breastfeeding; or if you are the parent or guardian of a child up to age 5, you are encouraged to contact your local county health department or WIC agency to apply.

WCCD students named to ACCS 2023 All-Alabama Academic Team

The Alabama Community College System's (ACCS) top scholars from across the state were recently honored as members of the 2023 All-Alabama Academic Team during a recognition program.

Wallace Community College-Dothan (WCCD) students Jammie Sanchez (Slocomb, AL) and Natalia Lara-Trejo (Union Springs, AL) were selected to the 2023 Team.
